Salon Health Concerns: Making Sure Your Salon is Safe & Clean

One of the most important concerns in a salon should be that it is safe and clean. You certainly do not want to frequent a salon that does not seem to care about cleanliness. Other than the obvious dirt and grime, how can you tell if your salon is safe and clean? Here are some important things to look for to ensure your salon won’t make you sick:

Look around. If you can see simple dirt, grime, and even filth, it’s time to go elsewhere. If the salon owner and employees don’t even take the time to do normal cleaning, what makes you think they will take the time to do the thorough cleaning that a salon will also need daily?

Do they clean after each customer? This is one of the most important things a salon can do for sanitary reasons. You certainly do not want to be a customer if they do not clean and disinfect after each customer.

Different services and treatments require different cleaning. If you are tanning, you will want to be sure that the beds are disinfected and cleaned after every use. Also, make sure there is a supply of clean towels and goggles for your use. If you are in a standup booth, the floor of the booth should be disinfected after ever use, as well.

Massage bed linens should be changed after each and every client. Make sure your masseuse washes their hands before starting. There should be clean towels offered and you should feel as though you are almost in a hospital setting.

Is the hair care equipment sanitized after each use? All scissors, combs, brushes, and clips should be sanitized after each use. You certainly do not want to have your stylist start without washing their hands, either.

The floor should be swept after each client, if their hair was cut. Not only does this keep the salon clean, it will make it much safer. It’s easy to slip on hair that is left on the floor.

This also leads to another point of safety. Make sure the floor is quickly cleaned up after any spills or splashes from when hair is washed. You certainly do not want to slip and fall.

Nail treatments require special care. Your manicurist will sometime clip a nail too short or a catch a cuticle, which can result in bleeding. With today’s many contagious diseases, you must make sure the manicurist is sanitizing all of her equipment after a client. This will not only protect you, but the manicurist as well.

A salon should be clean and safe. You will often be able to tell as soon as you walk in whether you want to become a client. If you see something that is not safe, leave. It’s best not to tempt fate and you certainly don’t want to end up hurt or sick from a simple visit to a salon.
